“In 2018, PPNYC looks forward to working with our elected officials to advance sexual and reproductive rights and health equity across the city.”
NEW YORK – Today Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) released its legislative priorities for New York City for 2018. PPNYC will be advocating for a range of policies and legislation that impact the communities they serve—and will call on NYC’s elected officials to step up even more in the face of unprecedented attacks on sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice from Washington.
“Planned Parenthood of New York City applauds the city’s leadership when it comes to standing up for the health and rights of New Yorkers,” says Laura McQuade, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of New York City. “Yet there remain serious gaps in access to resources, ongoing health disparities and areas where we urgently need our lawmakers to act. In 2018, PPNYC looks forward to working with our elected officials to advance sexual and reproductive rights and health equity across the city.”
PPNYC’s legislative agenda for New York City includes:
- Access to affordable abortion and birth control
- Funding for Planned Parenthood
- Safe access to reproductive health care facilities
- Accountability of crisis pregnancy centers
- Support for youth and minors’ rights
- Comprehensive sexuality education in grades K-12
- LGBQ + TGNC rights and inclusive care
- HIV prevention and care
- Immigrant rights and health care
- Sexual and reproductive care for incarcerated individuals
- Support for women and families
- Fair wages for all workers
- Gender-based violence prevention
“In addition to fighting for access to sexual and reproductive health care, we are advocating for better policies in many areas that affect our patients’ lives,” explains McQuade. “For New Yorkers to be able to build the families and futures they want, they should be adequately paid, not fear deportation, and have access to the resources to achieve these dreams and care for their loved ones.”
Two of PPNYC’s major legislative focuses are getting comprehensive sexuality education in all NYC schools K-12, and calling on the city to aggressively investigate crisis pregnancy centers.
“NYC is the largest metropolitan area in the United States, with more than one million young people enrolled in our public schools,” says McQuade. “However, many of our students have never received a comprehensive sexual health education class. This is unacceptable. With attacks on sex education from President Trump and Congress, we must invest in sexuality education for our city’s young people right now.”
“We applaud Mayor Bill de Blasio for creating a Task Force on Sexual Health Education, and we urge the administration to implement a robust sexual health education policy that ensures teachers are supported and that students in all grades are given the medically accurate, inclusive education they deserve,” says McQuade. “We look to the City Council to make sure such a policy is enacted and to provide the resources needed to support NYC students’ health education.”
“Crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in NYC continue to use deceptive tactics that mislead women and discourage them from seeking licensed medical care. New York City must aggressively investigate these fake clinics, ensure compliance with the city’s law, and do more to inform New Yorkers about their full available sexual and reproductive health care options, free from judgement or shame,” says McQuade.
Since 1916, Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) has been an advocate for and provider of sexual and reproductive health services and education for New Yorkers. Providing more than 100,000 patient visits annually, PPNYC’s health care centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island offer sexual and reproductive health services, including gynecological care, birth control, cancer screening, pregnancy testing, abortion, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, HIV prevention, testing and counseling, transgender hormone therapy and vasectomy. Through a threefold mission of clinical services, education, and advocacy, PPNYC brings better health and more fulfilling lives to each new generation of New Yorkers. As a voice for reproductive freedom, PPNYC supports legislation and policies to ensure that all New Yorkers will have access to the full range of reproductive health care services and information.
