Long Island Planned Parenthood Statement Regarding June 25, 2015 US Supreme Court Decision in King v. Burwell
Smithtown, NY/Hempstead, NY – Leaders at Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) and Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP) applaud today’s Supreme Court decision to uphold the availability of health insurance subsidies for the millions of people in the 34 states that did not establish state insurance marketplaces. Today’s ruling by the high court in King v. Burwell is a major triumph for over 4 million women – including 1.4 million women of color – who are enrolled in federally-facilitated market place coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“This historic Supreme Court decision upheld Congress’ intent to provide financial assistance to individuals seeking affordable health coverage, regardless of whether they reside in a state that opted to operate its own marketplace,” said JoAnn D. Smith, President & CEO of PPNC. “As the leading women’s health care provider and advocate in Nassau County, we see firsthand the extraordinary benefits of the ACA and availability of financial help for women. Today’s ruling is a victory for those women who will benefit from ACA insurance coverage which makes available affordable birth control, maternity care, cancer screenings, and other preventive care that women need and deserve.”
“While New York is one of the states that operates its own state marketplace under the ACA, we celebrate today’s decision which not only enables millions of women to keep their coverage but ensures that millions more will be eligible for financial assistance to access the health care coverage they need,” said Reina Schiffrin, President & CEO of PPHP. “This is a momentous and empowering decision for American women and their families.” she concluded.
