Continuing Education Units

Herpes: Addressing fear and stigma when counseling and educating patientswill be offered on November 8, 2017 from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. and November 11, 2017 from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. at Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota’s Vandalia Clinic and Administrative Offices, located at 671 Vandalia Street in St. Paul.

The course will be led by Mary Alivia Tolsma PA-C, MPH a Bilingual PA practicing at Planned Parenthood clinics throughout Minnesota. She is the Clinical Practice Lead for the float team at Planned Parenthood and serves on the board of the Minnesota Academy of PAs. She first joined Planned Parenthood in 2008, and left her clinic assistant gig in 2011 to pursue a dual degree PA-MPH at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She grew up bi-coastal (Massachusetts, Maine, and Oregon), but moved to Minnesota to attend Carleton College, where she earned a B.A. in Biology, played volleyball, and studied abroad in Argentina and Guatemala. She currently resides east of the river in Saint Paul with her husband Adam (a designer, Packer, novice curler), her new kid Jan (18mo), and three crazy ex-street cats.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain risk reduction for seronegative individuals, to reduce likelihood of acquisition of HSV.

  • Discuss HSV testing recommendations and rationale behind it.

  • Recognize when emotional resources are needed during a diagnosis/exam, and offer these resources and key communication.

  • Educate patients on natural course of HSV in an immunocompetent individual.
