July 20, 2009—Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley is pleased to announce the appointment of Ruth-Ellen Blodgett as its new President & CEO.  “With twenty years of experience as a health care executive in New York State, Ruth-Ellen Blodgett will make an outstanding leader,” Board Chair Helen Ullrich said, “Her expertise in management as well as her considerable strategic and operational skills will be an enormous asset to the organization at a time when the health care crisis and poor economy are putting tremendous pressure on safety-net providers like Planned Parenthood.”

Before coming to the mid-Hudson Valley, Ruth-Ellen Blodgett was the CEO of Planned Parenthood of Northern New York with administrative offices in Watertown, NY, where she effected a complete organizational turnaround.  Prior to her work with Planned Parenthood, Ms. Blodgett was the Vice President of Community Development at Samaritan Medical Center.  Her background includes hospital administration, managing primary care and women’s health services, and experience running outpatient psychiatry and addiction services as well as prenatal care programs.  Her work earned her an award for “unique contributions to maternal health” by the NY State Perinatal Association.

Since joining Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley in September 2008 to oversee business development, education and outreach, Ruth-Ellen Blodgett has been involved in nearly every aspect of implementing the agency’s strategic plan and running health center operations.  In her new role as President & CEO, Ms. Blodgett will continue Planned Parenthood’s work to expand access to reproductive health services and education and provide expert leadership as she guides the organization into the future.

“The skills I gained as CEO of Planned Parenthood of Northern New York, my expertise in developing community health networks, and my passion for the mission of Planned Parenthood will guide my vision for continuing on the path the Board has set for Planned Parenthood Mid-Hudson Valley,” Ms. Blodgett said,  “and I look forward to taking on the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Ms. Blodgett succeeds Clare Coleman, who will become the Chief Executive Officer of the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association in Washington DC.
