For more than 100 years, Planned Parenthood has promoted a common-sense approach to sexual and reproductive health and well-being based on respect for each individual's right to make informed, independent decisions about sex, health, and family planning. As a trusted health care provider and a passionate advocate, Planned Parenthood delivers vital health care, sex education and sexual health information to people of all ages, gender identities, national origins, races, and sexual orientations.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan has health centers across the state. From Detroit to Grand Rapids and from Kalamazoo to Marquette, you can count on us for quality, compassionate care.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to be a leading provider of non-judgmental, high-quality sexual and reproductive health care and education, a committed community partner in advancing equity, and a fierce advocate for access to health care for all.

OUR VISION

We are working toward the realization of a just and equitable society: Where every person’s right to dignity, justice, and autonomy is recognized and protected; where every person has equitable access to sexual and reproductive health care, which will always include abortion; and where every person has the freedom, security, and information to make the best decisions for themselves about their sexual and reproductive well-being, free from shame and stigma.

OUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTH EQUITY

Health equity means that every person has a fair and just opportunity to care for their bodies and attain the highest quality of life possible, on their own terms.

At Planned Parenthood of Michigan, we acknowledge that inequities, such as racism, gender-based discrimination, white supremacy, ableism, and income inequity often intersect and that they are present throughout our society. These inequities affect communities differently and can influence our health just as much as our individual choices.

We also know that equality is not equity. Our commitment to equity requires us to think beyond “one size fits all” strategies because every person has unique needs and lived experiences.  As a leader in sexual and reproductive health care, we have a responsibility to take action. We must work to build a world where health isn't determined by race, gender, disability, or zip code; a world where everyone can achieve the highest quality of life possible.

To do this, we reflect upon our own history. We tackle bias and inequity in our policies, practices and how we work with each other. We collaborate with community partners who are also working to build a better world. We utilize evidence-based best practices in our programming and the services we offer. And as we work to uphold our commitment to health equity, we will fearlessly ask for and accept feedback and learn and grow with transparency and humility.

PRINCIPLES THAT GUIDE OUR DEI WORK

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is not an afterthought, but rather it is the very foundation upon which we base our policies, procedures, strategic goals, interpersonal interactions, and organizational culture; it is at the very core of our mission and vision.

  • Racism, anti-LGBTQIA+ bias, and other persistent systems of inequity are often upheld in subtle ways and can be found within one’s personal behavior and the systems, structures, communities, and cultures in which we all participate.

  • The realization of a just and equitable society begins with us as individuals; we all have a personal responsibility to this work.

  • How we conduct ourselves internally as a team and externally as a community partner must be intersectional, honoring that no one defines themselves by just one identity and that all the identities that comprise our humanity deserve to be respected and cared for.

  • It is not enough to not be non-racist. To fulfill our mission and vision, we must continually strive to be anti-racist.

  • DEI does not require perfection but rather demonstrated commitment to accountability, lifelong growth, and fearlessness in the face of difficult conversations.
