Pregnancy is an exciting time! The journey through pregnancy and birth can be a joyful experience. You will have many questions, and our staff will teach you what you need to know to prepare for a happy and healthy pregnancy, labor, and birth. We offer our services in a supportive, nonjudgmental way to couples and to single parents, including your family and close support group if you wish.
Planned Parenthood of Michigan has teamed up with the University of Michigan Health Center to offer you the best in prenatal and birthing care services. Our prenatal program is available at:

When you join our prenatal program, certified nurse midwives will see you at the Planned Parenthood health center for exams, evaluations, and consultations. The nurse midwives will care for you during your labor and birth at the University of Michigan Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.
What is a certified nurse midwife?
For centuries, midwives have attended women during pregnancy and childbirth, focusing on the mother and including those who are important to her. Certified nurse midwives are registered nurses who have advanced education in midwifery and nursing. They are certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and are licensed as both nurses and nurse midwives by the State of Michigan.
We believe that sexuality, pregnancy, and childbirth are significant, natural events in a woman’s life. Nurse midwives spend time listening to you and offering support and education. You will benefit from their experience and personal care, making informed health decisions with support and confidence. Research shows that nurse midwives provide cost-effective care that is safe, sensitive, and focused on the individual woman.
While our holistic program has the goal of keeping medical intervention at a minimum, the certified nurse midwives work with physician colleagues who are readily available for medical consultation, collaborative management, or referral for care if needed.
Our prenatal program services include:
- family planning counseling
- well-woman exams
- preconception counseling
- prenatal care
- education on nutrition, exercise, labor and birth, parenting, breast feeding, and baby care
- labor support and management
- assistance during your baby’s birth
- care after your baby’s birth
