After long and careful consideration, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan of Washington DC has decided to close the Ophelia Egypt Health Center at 3937A Minnesota Ave., N.E., effective December 31, 2014. The lease on the property ends on that date, and we will vacate the premises by that date. The Teen Program Center at 3933 Minnesota Ave., N.E., will be closed, effective October 31, 2014
Faced with the hard reality of a significant deficit in its operating budget last year, PPMW must trim expenses so they are in alignment with revenues. Consequently, with the approval of the PPMW Board of Directors, the leadership of PPMW has decided to implement these closings. The objective is to consolidate and reallocate our resources so that we can continue to provide high quality health care services to the teens, women and men we serve.
There will be a staffing reorganization which will result in some people being transferred to other health centers. Unfortunately, others will lose their positions. All employees who are losing their positions
have been notified. They will receive terms and compensation in compliance with standing PPMW employment policies.
Named in honor of one of our finest and most committed volunteers, Mrs. Ophelia Egypt, PPMW has had a home east of the river and a "family" at the Health Center and at the Program Center in the neighborhood for decades. Closing these centers was an extremely difficult decision. The PPMW Board and leadership recognize and honor the important connection between the Health Center and the community as part of the rich legacy of Mrs. Egypt.
But, tough decisions had to be made about the allocation of our resources so that we can continue to provide quality health care to our patients east of the Anacostia River and throughout the DC metropolitan area. We will work with our patients to assist them in accessing quality reproductive care at our Schumacher Center in downtown DC and in Silver Spring.
As part of the bold vision our Board and leadership have set for PPMW, we will open a new comprehensive headquarters and health center in Northeast Washington near Union Market and the Trinidad neighborhood in the summer of2015. PPMW is committed to ensuring that everyone in our community has access to affordable, high quality, non-judgmental reproductive health care at one of the PPMW health centers or through our partnerships with other community health providers. We remain committed to our mission to care no matter what.
