Mother and Daughter Retreat
This retreat provided an intensive opportunity for mothers and daughters (ages 12 to 16) to come together for a healthy and constructive dialogue regarding sex and sexuality.
Individual and combined workshops covered the importance of effective communication regarding this important topic in the lives of mothers and daughters. Forty-seven women and girls came to the Sheraton Hotel at Newark Airport on August 13 and 14, 2010.
In a pleasant setting, with structured activities and learning opportunities, family members were able to deepen relationships, enjoy crafting artwork, discuss concerns, and increase their knowledge. The keynote speaker opened the retreat bringing a lively message to the audience regarding family values and how to have challenging conversations about sexuality.
Participants commented that the retreat had a powerful impact on the them. In fact, the most common response to an open-end statement on the evaluation was "I wish the retreat...were longer/the whole weekend." Others stated that they "wished the retreat happened more frequently and included dads and sons."
Other comments included: "very positive about the outcome and looking forward to the years with my daughter", "confident that my mom and I can have more serious conversations", a newfound sense of hope for open communication", "got to bond with my mother", "the Keynote Speaker was amazing", "inspired with a sense of clarity."
All of the participants said they would recommend the retreat to a friend, and said they would use their newly acquired knowledge to make healthy sexual decisions in the future.
