On Monday, March 26, 2012, Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region (PPGMR) is offering free packs of Next Choice® emergency contraception at its health center at 2430 Poplar Avenue to women and men 17-years-old or older. One pack only per person. Offer is good while supplies last. No appointment is needed.
Planned Parenthood’s free offer is a part of the Back Up Your Birth Control campaign, designed to expand access to emergency contraception by increasing public education and awareness. Each year a partnership of leading advocacy organizations and service providers conduct educational outreach and offer free services connected with emergency contraception.
Emergency Contraception, also known as EC or the “morning after pill,” is a method of birth control that can prevent conception after a couple has had unprotected sex. Emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy if taken within five days of unprotected sex. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation, or the release of an egg from a woman’s ovary. It may also inhibit sperm from reaching an egg, thereby preventing fertilization.
Emergency contraception is not an abortion pill and has no effect on an established pregnancy. It is most effective if taken as soon as possible after having unprotected intercourse. Learn more about emergency contraception here: http://www.womenshealth.gov/publications/our-publications/fact-sheet/emergency-contraception.cfm#c.
Emergency contraception is not as effective as regular hormonal contraception (pill, patch or ring) or long-term birth control methods such as an intrauterine device or IUD. Emergency contraception cannot and should not replace these more effective methods of birth control. But it is a good back up birth control method for women who’ve had unexpected unprotected sex or in case a condom breaks or slips off.
