Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region is excited to announce the available internships for Summer and Fall of 2017! 


Our mission is to improve health and well-being by providing high-quality, non-judgmental sexual health care, honest and accurate sexuality education, and reproductive health and rights advocacy.

DETAILS FOR APPLYING

Applicants/Qualifications

  • Applicants must be current college students enrolled in either a 2 or 4 year program.
  • All applicants must be willing to submit to a background check.
  • Applicants should plan to commit between 10-15 hours per week to PPGMR during internship. See each internship descriptions for details. 
  • Applicants who are selected to move forward in the process will be scheduled for either a Skype or in-person interview. 
  • Applicants should be passionate, dependable leaders who can commit to their schedule discussed with the site supervisor. Great communication skills, punctuality, and taking initiative are necessary!

Application:

  • Applications should include the following: (1) your resume, (2) a statement about why you want to intern at Planned Parenthood/in a specific position, (3) a list of your top three internship choices ranked, and (4) if you are applying for Summer or Fall. Applications that do not include all of these components will not be considered.

Deadlines:

  • The deadline to submit Summer applications is April 10, 2017.
  • The deadline to submit Fall applications is May 1, 2017.

Benefits:

  • PPGMR interns will receive a monthly stipend of $200/month for three months OR class credit.
  • Our interns are, for the most part, able to work a flexible schedule. 

The weekly hours requirement for each position is included in its description. You'll be able to talk about the details of your schedule with your supervisor if you are selected to move forward in the process. Please note if the internship you select will require occasional evening/weekend work

  • Interns will also be in the know about our upcoming volunteer and community involvement opportunities! Participation in at least some of these events will be expected.

 

Community Advocacy Intern

Site Supervisor: Community Engagement Coordinator

Position Description: The Community Advocacy Intern will assist the External Affairs department and the Community Engagement Coordinator with organizing outreach events, advocacy programs, Free Condoms Memphis operations, communications, and internship coordination. The Community Advocacy Intern will also assist in coordinating volunteers in the following: orientations, appreciation, and social events.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Good communication skills, social media proficiency, graphic design experience, and volunteer leadership are preferred but not required. 
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week.
  • Some nights and weekends will be required. 


Health Center Education/Intake Intern

Site Supervisor: Health Center Manager

Position Description: The Health Center Education/Intake Intern will assist the Vice President of Patient Services and the Health Center Manager with education and intake of patients before abortion procedures. This intern will talk to clients on abortion days about their pregnancy options and the risks/benefits to having the procedure, initiate the consenting process, and collect a medical history from the client. This may include taking vitals, like blood pressure and temperature, of clients.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Intern needs to be available to train with staff, must be reliable, and must be able to commit to a regular schedule. 
  • This intern needs to be available on Mondays and Thursdays between 8:00am - 4:00 pm, either the full day or for an 8:00pm - 12:00pm shift or 12:00 - 4:00 pm shift. (Applicants with full-day availability on Mondays and Thursdays will be given preference.)  

 

Patient Services Intern

Site Supervisor: Health Center Manager

Position Description: The Patient Services Intern will assist the health center staff with data entry, maintaining medical records current, scanning, and answering phones.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Intern should be a self-starter with great customer service and a quick learner who works well in fast-paced environment. 
  • Intern needs to be available to train with staff, must be reliable, and must be able to commit to a regular schedule. 
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week, sometime between the hours of 9:00am–6:00pm, Monday through Friday.

 

Education Intern

Site Supervisor: Director of Education

Position Description:  Conducts educational programs and related activities, designed to provide young people and families in the Memphis area with the age-appropriate reproductive and sexual health information and skills; while working to reduce cultural and communication barriers to accessing comprehensive sexuality education services and reproductive health services. 

This internship will provide you with substantial experience in education and community outreach, event planning and organizing, community engagement, networking opportunities, and advocacy in addition to gaining valuable office experience working in a non-profit.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with education sessions and outreach events
  • Assist with the planning and curriculum development of education modules
  • Help increase outreach with local colleges and universities
  • Assist with general outreach events and functions
  • Help with writing and editing of proposals and reports
  • Table at awareness, advocacy, and fundraising events
  • Provide support in creating and publishing education brochures
  • Assist with database  management and tracking events

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Works well independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office and Google office programs) and able to learn new programs quickly (databases, etc.)
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills (requires speaking in front of groups of various ages and backgrounds)
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Interest in community education
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week.
  • Weekend work is often required, some evenings are required.  

 

Community Organizer Intern 

Site Supervisor: Community Organizer 

Position Description: PPGMR is looking for the next generation of community organizers. We are seeking hardworking, motivated, and enthusiastic students for our internship. If you are interested in working in a leadership capacity on a campaign, we encourage you to apply. Our office is a fast-paced environment. Staff depend on reliable students who are organized. This intern will be responsible for coordinating trainings and events, activating interested volunteers and mobilizing them as needed, and recruiting for Community Action Teams. The Organizer Intern will also be expected to attend community meetings, complete data entry in a timely manner, and document field activities through photo and video. This is a one of a kind experience that will introduce you to professional political experience, networking opportunities, and database and organizing skills.

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week – flexible schedule. 
  • Some night and weekend work will be required. 

 

Spanish-Speaking Health Educator Intern

Site Supervisor: Director of Education

Position Description: The Spanish-Speaking Health Educator Intern will assist the Education Department with organizing and facilitating sexual health education presentations and trainings. The Spanish-Speaking Health Educator Intern will receive comprehensive 2-day training on integrating local Spanish language and cultural forms into the promotion of pregnancy prevention, STI prevention, HIV prevention, and healthy sexuality education. The Spanish-Speaking Health Educator Intern will assist in planning events and putting together opportunities for community education.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • The Spanish-Speaking Health Educator Intern must provide a recommendation from a Spanish faculty member including something that speaks to their Spanish language proficiency. It is recommended, but not required, that they show proof of having been enrolled in and have satisfactorily completed at least one upper-level Spanish course.**
  • Knowledge of the local Latinx community and volunteering is preferred, but not required. 
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week. 
  • Some nights and weekends may be required. 

**Intern interviews for this position may include a verbal language proficiency test.

Development Intern

Site Supervisor: Director of Development

Position Description:  Have you wondered how Planned Parenthood sustains affordable, confidential, and essential reproductive health care and counseling services to thousands of patients each year while also providing honest, fact-based sexuality education for women, men, and teens in the Mid-South? This is your chance to join the team that creates and implements the organization's fundraising efforts, ensuring quality, compassionate, nonjudgmental health care for all in the Mid-South. No matter what.

This internship will provide you with substantial experience in nonprofit development and management, grant writing, events planning, researching donor prospects, solicitation strategizing, in addition to gaining valuable office experience working in a non-profit.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Research new foundations/grants to apply for funding
  • Help with editing of proposals and reports
  • Help in writing minor proposals and reports
  • Table at awareness and fundraising events
  • Assist event preparation, logistics, and execution
  • Help organizing events
  • Provide support in sending mailings and invitations
  • Assist with database record input and management

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office) and able to learn new programs quickly (databases, etc.)
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Interest in a nonprofit career - particularly development and fundraising, and management
  • Interns will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week.
