New Pilot Program Launched by Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts

SOMERVILLE, MA – Yesterday, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) launched the ABC (Annual Birth Control) Plan at their Davis Square Location, Plan: a Planned Parenthood Express Center. The ABC Plan offers 20% lower pill prices for self-pay patients signing up for one year’s worth of birth control pills with just one clothes-on visit at PPLM. One year’s supply of oral contraceptives will be mailed with free shipping to a patients’ home in discrete packaging in increments of three.

Hormonal birth control is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently and correctly.  With the ABC Plan, patients will no longer need to remember to call in refills, wait in pharmacy lines or go anywhere but their mailbox to start their next pack of pills, allowing them to stay on schedule.

The ABC Plan will help ensure that women have uninterrupted access to contraception. This provides benefits to a woman’s health and to public health. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 50% of women who are at risk for an unintended pregnancy do not consistently use contraception, often because patients have problems accessing or using their methods of choice.

By investing in a program that makes birth control more affordable and accessible, PPLM is ultimately saving taxpayer money. Every dollar invested in family planning saves taxpayers over four dollars in Medicaid expenditures that otherwise would have been needed for pregnancy-related care.

PPLM is a trusted health care provider of affordable, confidential services in Somerville and across the state. Located at 260 Elm Street in the heart of Davis Square, Plan provides area residents with clothes-on preventive care, including birth control, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, and STI screenings, as well as referrals for other health care services.

“We are so excited to launch the ABC Plan for old and new patients at Plan,” said Dianne Luby, President/CEO of PPLM.  “Our unique express model at Plan has always made it easy and affordable for people to get expert reproductive health care that helps them maintain their health and protect their futures. The ABC Plan will make birth control even more affordable and help women use their method consistently.”

Because of its location on the MBTA Red Line, Plan provides convenient services to residents of Somerville and Cambridge, as well as surrounding communities.  Plan's hours are Monday-Friday 11am - 7pm and Saturday 10am - 5pm.  Patients should call (617) 616-1600 or visit www.pplm.org to schedule an appointment – same-day appointments are often available.
