(November 30, 2015) - Planned Parenthood of Maryland issued the following statement from Dr. Amina Chaudhry, Interim President and CEO, on the tragic events at a Planned Parenthood health center in Colorado Springs, Colorado:

“Our hearts go out to Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and to all those affected by the terrible tragedy that occurred Friday at a Planned Parenthood health center in Colorado Springs. We are grateful to law enforcement agencies who handled this tragedy... with courage and compassion. Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains staff have shown incredible courage, dedication, and resilience in the aftermath of Friday’s events.

“We recently learned that eyewitnesses confirm that the man who will be charged with the tragic and senseless shooting that resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to nine others at Planned Parenthood's health center in Colorado Springs was motivated by opposition to safe and legal abortion.

"This is an appalling act of violence targeting access to health care and terrorizing skilled and dedicated health care professionals and patients over the last few months, and that environment breeds acts of violence. We know that Americans reject the hatred and vitriol that fueled this tragedy.

“At Planned Parenthood of Maryland, the safety of patients and staff is our top priority, and we have strong security measures in place to ensure that our health centers are safe, supportive, welcoming environments for all people to get the high-quality, compassionate health care they need. Our doors are open as usual, and they will continue to be open to provide this essential health care.

“In Colorado and across the country, Planned Parenthood's doors remain open and we will continue to provide compassionate health care to people who have trusted us and relied on us for generations. No matter how vicious attacks are on Planned Parenthood, we will not back down from providing high quality reproductive care, no matter what."
