(June 13, 2016) - Statement from Karen J. Nelson, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Maryland:

“The Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM) community deplores all acts of violence. Our hearts and thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the victims, the Orlando community, the LGBTQ community, and our sister affiliate Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (PPSWCF), as we grieve this horrific tragedy.

The effects of this senseless shooting are having powerful reverberations during Pride Month through the LGBTQ community. We stand in solidarity against acts of terrorism and hatred on individuals because of who they are or who they love. This country is overdue for serious steps to address the deplorable increase in gun violence that has led to deaths in every corner of our country.

PPSWCF has asked PPM to help raise awareness widely for the need for blood donors given the high number of victims. OneBlood, a local blood bank in Orlando, has posted an EMERGENCY need for O-, O+, and AB Plasma in the light of the tragedy. Equality Florida has has set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for the victims and families of the horrific shooting at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub. If you or a friend are in Central Florida have a chance to go donate blood or plasma please do-- You could very well save someone's life. To find a donation center or Big Red Bus near you call 1.888.9Donate. Together in Solidarity, Karen J. Nelson."
