LOS ANGELES – Each of us at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is shocked and deeply saddened by the death of Dr. George Tiller, an abortion provider who was gunned down while ushering in his church in Wichita, Kansas.

Our hearts and our prayers go out to Dr. Tiller’s wife, his children and other family members, to his brave and dedicated staff and to the thousands of women who received Dr. Tiller’s compassionate care. We echo the sentiments of President Barack Obama who said yesterday in a statement: “However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence."

Dr. Tiller is the fourth abortion provider to be killed since 1993. Despite being the frequent target of anti-abortion attacks and violence, Dr. Tiller bravely remained committed to providing women and their families with compassionate abortion care, often under some of the most difficult medical circumstances a woman can face late in pregnancy.

We will miss Dr. Tiller as a colleague and collaborator dedicated to serving women and families.

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles remains committed, as always, to the health and safety of our staff and patients.
