Council Formally Opposes Efforts to Defund Crucial Healthcare Services for Women in Los Angeles

Los Angeles – In a clear and powerful message of support for family health care services, the Los Angeles City Council today voted unanimously to oppose any efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.

The resolution, which reiterates a position previous LA City Councils have taken in support of the services provided by Planned Parenthood, comes as Planned Parenthood is being targeted by Republican senators and presidential candidates who are proposing to defund the health care services provided at Planned Parenthood health centers throughout America.

“As national political candidates shamelessly threaten important health care services for families, we thought it was important to show a strong message of support for Planned Parenthood here in Los Angeles,” said Councilmember Mike Bonin, who was a co-author of the resolution. “We support the safe and affordable health care services that Planned Parenthood provides nearly 150,000 women and men in LA, we support the education and outreach programs that Planned Parenthood provides teens, and we support the life-saving and cutting-edge research Planned Parenthood helps conduct. We support Planned Parenthood and urge the Senate to stop using this important health care provider in their callous political games.”

"I stand with Planned Parenthood because for many people, including many of my constituents, Planned Parenthood is the primary healthcare provider in their lives," said Councilmember Nury Martinez, the resolution's other co-author. "When Congress talks about the federal defunding of Planned Parenthood, they are talking about removing services for both men and women, young and old, not only for family planning but also for preventative care services such as cancer screenings and breast exams."

"We thank the Los Angeles City Council for standing with Planned Parenthood and the 150,000 patients we serve in LA County every year,” said Celinda Vazquez, VP of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles.

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is the largest provider of reproductive health care services in Los Angeles County, providing health services to nearly 150,000 women, men and teens each year at 20 health center locations throughout the County. 93% of Planned Parenthood’s clients receive family planning services, and 77% are at or below the federal poverty level. Additionally, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles' education and outreach programs deliver sexuality and family planning education to more than 78,500 teens, women and men each year, with programs including middle and high school responsible sexuality courses, parent-child communication programs, Promotoras Comunitarias (Latina community health educators), and teen education programs.

The Council resolution was co-authored by Councilmembers Mike Bonin and Nury Martinez and seconded by Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield, Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Paul Koretz, Curren Price Jr. and Herb Wesson. Once signed by Mayor Garcetti, the resolution will allow City representatives in Washington D.C. to formally advocate against any efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.
