“Born Alive Bill” Moves to a Full Floor Vote in the State House

FRANKFORT - Today, SB 227, a politically-charged “born alive” bill, was passed out of committee and will soon be voted on by the full Kentucky State House. If signed into law, this bill would criminalize doctors who perform an abortion during labor and delivery, a procedure that does not occur and is not based in science or reality.

Instead of addressing high cervical cancer rates or the lack of an OB/GYN in 60 percent of counties in Kentucky, the General Assembly continues to attack reproductive health care and stigmatize abortion. SB 227 was not written by medical professionals, it was written by politicians in Frankfort to shame patients and punish providers for a practice that does not even happen.

Statement from Tamarra Wieder, Kentucky Public Affairs and Policy Director:

“This deeply misguided law does nothing to protect the health and safety of Kentucky women. Abortion during delivery is a myth pushed by extremist groups who are hellbent on stigmatizing reproductive health care. Anti-abortion activists will stop at nothing to force their agenda to ban safe, legal abortion — including creating a false crisis and making outlandish claims that aren’t based in reality. A patient’s health should determine medical decisions, not a lawmaker’s political agenda.”
