Urges Men to Make Sexual Health Care a Priority

Chicago, IL – Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) is celebrating National Men’s Health Week (June 15 – 21) and Father’s Day by encouraging men to go to their local Planned Parenthood health center.

According to a 2002 study by the Guttmacher Institute, only about 14% of U.S. men 15 - 49 make a reproductive and sexual health visit annually. Young men who are at the greatest risk of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are even less likely to see a health care professional.

“The importance of sexual health care for men is often overlooked,” stated Steve Trombley, President & CEO of PPIL. “Many men lack essential information, access to important services and, in many cases, even awareness that they have sexual and reproductive health needs of their own. However, it is essential that all men, especially those who are sexually active, have regular sexual health screenings.”

Planned Parenthood health centers throughout the state offer the following health care services for male patients:

• STI testing and treatment
• HIV testing and counseling
• Penile skin lesion/rash (jock itch) exam and treatment
• Urinary discomforts
• Colorectal cancer screening and referral
• Testicular cancer screenings and referral

The lack of information about and access to sexual health care among men is reflected in a 2007 STI report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to the study, Chlamydia cases between 2003 and 2007 increased by 42.9% among men compared to a 17.3% increase among women. Likewise, syphilis cases between 2006 and 2007 increased by 17.9% among men compared to a 10% increase among women.

AIDS also continues to be a prevalent problem among the male population, particularly among gay men. According to the CDC, eight in 10 adults living with AIDS in the U.S. are men, 71% of whom are men who have sex with men.

In honor of National Men’s Health Week, PPIL will be offering $5 off services for new male patients. Coupons are accessible through the PPIL website, www.ppil.org through the month of June.
