Health Center to Serve More Patients, Expand Access to Preventive Services

CHICAGO, IL — This evening, the newly renovated Planned Parenthood of Illinois (PPIL) Wicker Park health center located at 1152 N. Milwaukee Avenue was officially unveiled at a dedication event in honor of two of PPIL’s longest supporters.

The renovated health center, located at the same address as the former PPIL Wicker Park health center, is 35 percent larger than the former health center. It features a larger waiting room and additional patient exam rooms which will allow PPIL to serve more women, men and teens in the community.

“We’re thrilled to unveil our new Wicker Park health center,” said Carole Brite, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Illinois. “There is a great need for preventive reproductive health care services in the Wicker Park and Humboldt Park communities. Our larger health center will help us meet that need and expand access to essential health care services such as lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control and STD testing and treatment.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cook County has the highest number of gonorrhea infections and second highest number of chlamydia and syphilis infections in the country.

Cook County also has some of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. According to the Illinois Department of Health and Human Services, between 2001 and 2005, 25 percent of births in West Town and 28 percent of births in Humboldt Park were to teenage mothers.

“Without Planned Parenthood’s services, the community is more vulnerable to unintended pregnancy, STDs and other serious health problems,” said Manny Flores, former 1st Ward Alderman and current PPIL board member. “Thanks to Planned Parenthood’s new health center, more women, men and teens in the community have a place to turn to for preventive health care services.”

Planned Parenthood of Illinois’ Wicker Park health center offers a wide range of preventive reproductive health care services including: annual exams, birth control, emergency contraception, STD testing and treatment, HIV testing and counseling, men’s health services, HPV vaccine, Hepatitis A&B vaccine, pregnancy testing and options counseling, and more. Abortion services are not available at the Wicker Park health center but are available at the Loop (18 S. Michigan Ave., 6th Floor) and Near North (1200 N. LaSalle St.) locations.

The Wicker Park health center is open Monday – Saturday. Visit www.ppil.org or call 800-230-PLAN to make an appointment.
