The IUD

The IUD (intrauterine device) is a small, T-shaped device. It is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider.

The Implant

The implant is the size of a small match stick and is made of flexible plastic. It is inserted under the top layer of skin in the upper arm by a healthcare provider.

OK TO FORGET

After you get an IUD or implant, you don’t have to do anything to make sure it works! You’re all set, until you want it removed. It’s that easy!

LONG LASTING

The IUD and the implant can last a really long time, if you want them to! The IUD can last up to 3-12 years, depending on the type. The implant can last up to 5 years. If you want either of these options removed earlier, no problem! A healthcare provider can remove them anytime. Once removed, you are no longer protected from pregnancy.

PRIVATE

If someone has an IUD or implant, nobody can see it by looking at them. These are great options if you want your birth control method to be kept out of sight.

RELIABLE

The IUD and the implant are some of the most effective birth control methods. They are over 99% effective. That means that in the first year of use, less than 1 out of 100 people with an IUD or implant will become pregnant.

REVERSIBLE

The IUD and the implant will not affect your ability to become pregnant in the future. Once you get the IUD or the implant removed, it is possible to become pregnant.

NEW AND IMPROVED

This is not your mama’s IUD and implant! The IUD and the implant have evolved over time. These methods are safer and more effective than ever before.

USE WITH A CONDOM

The IUD and the implant are great at preventing pregnancy, but they do not protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Use a condom to reduce your risk of getting a STI.

USUALLY EASY TO GET

The IUD and the implant are inserted and removed by a healthcare provider in a quick and simple process.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Similar to all birth control methods, the IUD and the implant have possible side effects. Some of these may go away after 3-6 months. Talk with your health care provider to learn more.

Youth in Illinois can get many sexual health services, including birth control, on their own! We encourage you to talk with a trusted adult, but you do not need anyone’s permission to make an appointment. You can also come to Planned Parenthood no matter your income, insurance, gender identity, sexuality or immigration status.
