Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic Now Offers Long-Acting HIV Prevention, Apretude
For Immediate Release: Aug. 28, 2023
Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP) is pleased to announce the addition of Apretude to its HIV prevention services. Apretude is the first and only long-acting injectable PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) for reducing the risk of getting HIV. PPHP is one of the first Planned Parenthood affiliates to offer this service.
Patients on Apretude receive an injection from their health care provider every 8 weeks. The injectable PrEP is eligible for insurance coverage by many plans, including Medicaid. Apretude is available for both patients who are switching from PrEP pills, as well as those who are looking to start PrEP for the first time.
According to the CDC, patients who take PrEP as prescribed reduce their risk of getting HIV through sex by about 99%. As some patients find taking a daily pill burdensome or difficult to remember, Apretude eliminates these barriers, making it more likely for patients to stay consistent with their PrEP regimen.
“HIV prevention is evolving, and we are dedicated to ensuring that our patients benefit from these innovations,” said Dr. Meera Shah, Chief Medical Officer of PPHP. “Our patients have been asking for Apretude, so it was important to us to add it to our services. Being able to give patients a choice in their HIV prevention care puts them in the driver’s seat of their health, which leads to better health outcomes.”
PPHP is currently offering Apretude at its Smithtown health center (70 Maple Avenue, Smithtown, NY), with plans to expand to additional health centers soon. To inquire about an Apretude consult, patients can call 800-230-PLAN or visit pphp.org.
