[Elmsford, NY] -  Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP) is celebrating 90 years of providing high-quality, confidential, and compassionate health care.

PPHP’s history is rooted in grassroots efforts to bring reproductive health care to communities in need. Between 1933 and 1937, several Westchester communities sponsored four birth control and family planning clinics, with little or no apparent consultation or collaboration. These efforts are the earliest documented evidence of the "planned parenthood" movement reaching Westchester County. Similar community-based efforts took place in Rockland (1936) and Suffolk (1951) counties, all born from the same compassion and desire to give people control over their reproductive futures.

Following several other consolidations, January 1998 marked the official creation of Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic to collectively serve four counties: Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Suffolk counties. The organization was named after the two main waterways that geographically define each of the regions served by the original affiliates.

In all its iterations over the past 90 years, PPHP has served as a major provider of sexual and reproductive health care for the region and a leading public advocate in the suburban metropolitan area. Since its modest beginnings, PPHP has grown to proudly serve 27,000 patients annually, providing a wide range of health care services including birth control, gynecological exams, prenatal care, HIV testing and counseling, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment, cancer screenings, abortion care, vasectomy care, and gender affirming care. In addition to health care services, PPHP offers education and training programs to over 6,600 young people and adults every year and is a prominent player in advocating for sexual and reproductive health and rights at the local, state, and national level.

“At this pivotal moment for reproductive freedom, we welcome this moment to celebrate an incredible milestone — our 90th anniversary,” said Vincent Russell, president and CEO of PPHP. “We are taking this year to express gratitude for all of the health care providers, activists, and educators who came before us, and continue to look ahead toward the future for sexual and reproductive health.”

PPHP will be celebrating this anniversary over the course of the calendar year. For more information, visit pphp.org.
