As a pastor, I am deeply troubled over anti-abortion groups and their recent legislative attacks against women’s health care, especially Planned Parenthood. For many women, Planned Parenthood is the only medical provider they see in the course of the year.

The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (H. R. 217) brought to the House by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), would foist terrible hardship on people already in great need. The Pence bill would leave women without access to family planning services, pap tests, and cervical cancer screenings – critical services.

With so many problems in this country why is Congress playing politics with health care and the people who rely on it? I hope Congress turns away from this extreme ideological agenda and provides our nation with the basics – jobs and a stronger economy.

The writer is a member of the board of directors for Planned Parenthood.
