Every year, about 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and about 4,000 American women die of the disease.

But this does not have to be the case. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers: when caught early, the five-year survival rate is nearly 100 percent. January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness month and Planned Parenthood urges women to visit their providers to receive a preventive checkup. Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic offers routine cervical cancer screenings and the HPV vaccine, which protects against the types of HPV that most often cause cervical cancer.

In the New Year, let’s resolve to reduce the staggering incidence of cervical cancer. Contact your local Planned Parenthood health center to see if you’re due for a checkup.
