2024 Primary Presidential Election 

The Presidential Primary in New York is Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Early Voting will take place on Saturday, March 23 through Saturday, March 30.

What is a primary election? When a political party has multiple people who want to be the party's candidate in the general election, there is a primary election to determine who will be that candidate. 

Who votes in a primary election? New York has "closed primaries", meaning that voters can only participate if they are registered as a member of a political party.

When is the primary election? The Presidential Primary Election is Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Early Voting will take place on Saturday, March 23 through Saturday, March 30.

Where is the primary election? During the Early Voting period, you can vote at any polling placce in your county. Click here for a list of polling places in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Suffolk counties. 

If you are voting on Election Day on April 2, you must vote at your designated polling place. You can find your polling place by visiting voterlookup.elections.ny.gov. 

How can I vote in the primary election?

First, make sure your voter registration is up to date. The deadline to register before the primary is Saturday, March 23*. Visit elections.ny.gov to check your voter registration status.

*If you miss the deadline to register for the primaries, you should still update your voter registration status for upcoming elections later this year. The New York State Primary Election is on Tuesday, June 25 and the General Election is on Tuesday, November 5. 

If you are voting with a mail-in ballot: 

Applications for mail-in ballots must be received by a board of elections no later than March 23, 2024 to be eligible to vote in the Presidential Primary. You can request a ballot online here or by going to your local board of elections. 

If you are voting in-person:

The early voting period is from Saturday, March 23 and ends on Saturday, March 30. 

Election Day is Tuesday, April 2. You can find your polling place by visiting voterlookup.elections.ny.gov
