50th Anniversary Book Sale Breaks Record!
September 23rd, 2010 (DES MOINES, IA) – Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s 50th Anniversary Book Sale is one for the record books. PP Heartland raised $219,808.68, which is nearly nine-thousand dollars more than last year’s Fall Book Sale.
Around 7,500 customers from across the Midwest traveled to the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the five-day event. The sale featured 400,000 items including new and used books, CD’s, magazines, games, and a rare first edition book signed by Martin Luther King Jr. The highly sought after book sold opening night for $1,625.00.
Money raised from the Book Sale supports Planned Parenthood’s education and outreach programs throughout Iowa and Nebraska. PP Heartland’s education programs offer age-appropriate and research-based programs in reproductive health, human development and sexuality education for youth and adults in a variety of settings.
The Education Department also includes three Education Resource Centers with libraries in Des Moines, Lincoln and Omaha.
With more than 600 volunteers, Planned Parenthood’s semi-annual book sale is known as one of the largest charity book sales in the nation. A sale is held every fall and spring at the 4-H Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, raising nearly $500,000 annually.
The 2011 Spring Book Sale is Thursday, March 24th – March 28th.
