Des Moines, IA – As of February 21, 2018, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland (PPHeartland) will offer transgender care services – including hormone therapy – at two metro area locations.
“The health care system can be difficult for transgender people to navigate, especially in Iowa where resources are scarce,” said Angela Axdahl, regional director of health services for PPHeartland. “We are proud to be able to increase access by providing an affirming environment and a team of health professionals trained to help with medical transition.”
Transgender hormone therapy may include feminizing or masculinizing medications, as well as an exam, education and treatment planning by a team of specially trained staff. Since hormones can have both physical and emotional effects, health care providers will talk with each patient about their medical history and about resources needed to support a healthy transition prior to administering hormones.
PPHeartland will offer these services at its Rosenfield Health Center, located at 1000 E. Army Post Road in Des Moines, and at its West Health Center, located at 10534 New York Ave. in Urbandale. Individuals can schedule appointments now by calling 1.877.811.7526.
Transgender care has been available through Planned Parenthood in Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids for some time, with many patients traveling from across the state to access these services. The organization plans to expand transgender care to all Iowa health centers – including Ames, Council Bluffs and Iowa City – by the end of 2018.
In addition to offering transgender hormones, PPHeartland also offers an affirming environment for cancer screening, wellness education, STD testing and treatment, HIV testing and prevention care, annual exams, and other reproductive and sexual health services.
