April 28, 2015 (DES MOINES, IA) – The numbers are in for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s Spring Book Sale! This most recent sale raised a total of $186,825.03 in support of Planned Parenthood’s education and community outreach programs.
Now in its 55th year, the sale attracted more than 7,000 shoppers from across the Midwest who traveled to the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the five-day sale to find thousands of new and used books, collectibles and more.
“Once again, we are humbled by the dedication and support for the book sale, by volunteers and shoppers alike. Its success would be impossible without the enthusiasm of the community,” said PPHeartland President and CEO Suzanna de Baca. “It’s incredible to think of the impact that 55 years of support has had on our ability to serve our communities. Our health educators reached more than 98,000 people last year alone—in classrooms, at health fairs and community events, on college campuses and through presentations and trainings.”In 2014, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland launched a new Diversity and Inclusivity Taskforce that works to ensure cultural inclusivity and respect of the needs of the staff, community members and patients.
“This year we partnered with One Iowa, an organization working toward full equality for LGBTQ Iowans, to provide inclusivity training throughout the state,” said Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel, director of Education and Outreach. “We’re proud to be a trusted resource for health and sex education for more than 80 years. It’s truly a collaborative effort between our educators, our supporters and the communities we serve.”
The 2015 Fall Book Sale will be held October 8-12 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
