Thursday, October 23, 2014 (DES MOINES, IA) – Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s Fall Book Sale was a huge success, raising a total of $218,493.97 in support of Planned Parenthood’s education and community outreach programs.
More than 7,000 shoppers from across the Midwest traveled to the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the five-day sale, now in its 54th year, finding hundreds of thousands of new and used books, collectibles and more.
“After 54 years, it’s truly incredible to think about the impact that the continued support of the community has had on Planned Parenthood’s educational programs and, more importantly, the women, men and young people we serve,” said President and CEO Suzanna de Baca.
“The book sales are PPHeartland’s largest fundraisers for our Education & Outreach programs. Our health educators reached more than 98,000 people last year alone, in classrooms, at health fairs and community events, on college campuses and through presentations and trainings. The impact of purchasing a book at one of our book sales is huge.”
In 2013, Planned Parenthood’s education programs were recognized by Planned Parenthood Federation of America for excellence in leadership and outstanding work with the homeless youth population in Des Moines.
The 2015 Spring Book Sale will be held April 16-20 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
