March 29, 2018 (Lincoln, NE) – Today, Governor Ricketts’ strong armed language into the proposed budget that prevents 1 in 3 Title X patients receiving services at Planned Parenthood of the Heartland from continuing to see the provider of their choice. He has done so with no explanation for how those 8,000 patients will continue to receive care. Planned Parenthood health centers serve nearly one-third of all Title X patients in the state. Governor Ricketts has aligned himself with the Trump-Pence administration, and it is clear he will do anything in his power to take away basic rights from women. Despite what he says, it’s clear that the governor is pushing an anti-life agenda, as evident by his pro-NRA, pro-death penalty, anti-health care, anti-immigrant positions. As we have said before, attacks on Title X and Planned Parenthood are short-sighted and medically ignorant, and if they are put into effect, Nebraskans' lives will be at risk.
"Planned Parenthood applauds the senators who recognize the Title X budget language for what it is – a policy bill being used as a political weapon by the Ricketts-Foley administration – and who used their vote to fight the language from staying in the budget," said Meg Mikolajczyk, PPHeartland associate general counsel and senior public affairs manager. "That said, today’s vote does not change the stakes for the 8,000 Nebraskans who rely on Title X and Planned Parenthood for birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment. We will continue to work with senators to understand the full harmful impacts of the budget’s Title X language, which threatens to decimate Nebraska’s Title X program and take away access to critical preventive health care. We urge the Unicameral to resist the governor’s extreme political agenda and reject the Title X language in the budget."
