January 8, 2018 (Lincoln, NE) – Today Governor Ricketts announced that he will propose a new initiative to restrict access to family planning and cut Planned Parenthood of the Heartland out of Nebraska’s Title X program.  The Governor’s remarks are a blatant attack on Planned Parenthood and are part of an extreme agenda to completely dismantle reproductive health care access.

“How ironic that the Governor would make this announcement on the same day that the Legislature spent hours debating Nebraskans’ right to make decisions about our own bodies when it comes to motorcycle helmets,” said Meg Mikolajczyk, PPHeartland associate general counsel and senior public affairs manager. “It’s absurd that Gov. Ricketts and his allies don’t agree with the Constitution that bodily autonomy should also apply to health care decisions.”

Under Gov. Ricketts’ proposed agenda, 8,000 Nebraskans stand to lose access to health care at Planned Parenthood, their provider of choice – even though Title X funds in no way subsidize abortion.

Nebraska’s current Title X program has shown dramatic reductions in unintended pregnancies and other public health benefits since its implementation. These funds provide access to crucial health care such as birth control, STD testing and treatment, and life-saving cancer screenings.

“Attacks on Title X and Planned Parenthood are short-sighted, politically motivated and medically ignorant, and Nebraska women deserve better. We urge lawmakers to reject any attempts to cut any family planning provider out of Title X,” said Mikolajczyk.
