Sex Education in Iowa

Trained educators throughout Iowa provide sex education to youth and adults in their communities. Planned Parenthood is committed to providing sex education that is nonjudgmental, medically accurate, and culturally responsive.

Families Talking Together

Families Talking Together gives parents/caregivers the tools they need to break down communication barriers and build closeness with their children. By initiating conversations, opening the door to candid discussions and—more importantly— showing a willingness to listen, parents can ensure their child gets accurate information about healthy relationships, sex and how to protect themself.

Rights, Respect, Responsibility is a sex education curriculum that seeks to address both the functional knowledge related to sexuality and the specific skills necessary to adopt healthy behaviors. Rights, Respect, Responsibility speaks to three inherent values:

  • Rights: Youth have the inalienable right to honest sexual health information; confidential, consensual sexual health services; and equitable opportunities to reach their full potential.
  • Respect: Youth deserve respect. Valuing young people means authentically involving them in the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs and policies that affect their health and well-being.

Responsibility: Society has the responsibility to provide young people with all of the tools they need to safeguard their sexual health, and young people have the responsibility to protect themselves.
