The Brown Foundation, Inc. & The David and Lucile Packard Foundation

Some things about PPGC never change – one, our commitment to providing health services, education and advocacy. And two, the enormous generosity of the organizations that support us. In order to create the world we envision – one where individuals have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams – no ceilings, no limits – we need the strength of our communities behind us. For years, that is exactly what The Brown Foundation, Inc. and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation have done. And after a year that has challenged us like never before, we would like to thank and shine the spotlight on two of the several foundations that supported us through this truly unprecedented time.

The Brown Foundation

Founded by Herman and Margarett Root Brown and George R. and Alice Pratt Brown, The Brown Foundation has been a dedicated philanthropic leader in Texas since 1951. Planned Parenthood’s longstanding partnership with the Foundation has had an immeasurable positive impact on the Houston community.

Since receiving our first grant in 1954, The Brown Foundation has contributed over $10 million to PPGC, including a $4 million grant for our Prevention Park capital campaign – the largest contribution to that campaign. With enhanced efficiencies, room to grow, increased security, and heightened visibility, PPGC’s move into our Prevention Park headquarters greatly expanded our ability to serve the greater Houston area and beyond.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Houston, The Brown Foundation was among the first philanthropic partners to offer assistance. The Foundation graciously awarded PPGC a $190,000 COVID-19 response grant, which enabled us to quickly pivot to provide the health care, sexual health information, and advocacy efforts that our community needs, even in a pandemic.

The gift helped us launch direct-to-consumer Telehealth services, virtual appointments with our providers over a secure video-conferencing platform, which significantly expanded access and reduced barriers to care for many of our patients. Telehealth has also helped us reach patients in more rural areas where PPGC doesn’t have a physical health center.

The Brown Foundation works tirelessly to uplift the mission and communities of its grantees, and the Trustees of the Foundation are committed to creating opportunity by supporting education, uplifting spirits through the arts, strengthening communities through direct service, and enriching life through shared civic assets. As a grantee, PPGC is beyond thankful for the support of The Brown Foundation and its impact on the health and sustainability of communities in Houston and Southeast Texas.

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation

Founded in 1964 by its namesakes, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation has transformed from a California-based family foundation to an internationally-recognized change-maker. The Packard Foundation has partnered with PPGC since 2013, with a focus on our work in Louisiana. The Foundation has provided vital support and leadership to PPGC, and its partnership has helped build a powerful movement for strong, healthy communities and promoted a culture that normalizes access to a range of quality reproductive health services, including safe and legal abortion and comprehensive sexual education.

At the pandemic’s onset, the Packard Foundation connected PPGC to critical resources – including additional philanthropic partners and opportunities for cross-movement interaction and partnership – to support our affiliate as we pivoted to new methods of program delivery to ensure the safety of our communities and staff. This support helped PPGC implement several “Couch Canvasses”, which registered voters, encouraged individuals to complete the 2020 U.S. Census, and provided information about other ways that supporters could make their voices heard.

In October 2020, the Packard Foundation awarded PPGC a $1 million grant to support our Culture Change Project in Louisiana. With the Foundation’s critical support, the Culture Change Project seeks to organize and mobilize communities around pushing the needle on policies that increase access to reproductive health care services, abortion, and sex education. This project also seeks to support PPGC as a partner in reproductive health and rights work in Louisiana, use our resources to amplify the work of our coalition partners, and collect quantitative data from people in our service area.

We believe that when people are truly cared for, they will make their lives, their families – and even the world – better and healthier. The Packard Foundation has been instrumental in helping us care for Louisianans, and in enabling all individuals in making empowered, informed decisions about their bodies and lives. We are so grateful for their unwavering support.
