We’re less than a week away from Sine Die! While it’s true that our state legislature seems increasingly hostile to our health and rights, make no mistake: This fight is far from over. We may not have the votes at the Capitol, but we have something powerful—our voices, our determination, and our unwavering commitment to justice. We've faced adversity before, and we've always come out stronger. Here’s the latest:
1. SB 276 Signed Into Law: The bill to inappropriately reclassify mifepristone and misoprostol as controlled dangerous substances quickly passed through the legislature last week, and Gov. Landry signed it into law on Friday. We’ve seen powerful pushback from medical experts, advocates, and champion legislators, including Rep. Freeman’s impassioned House floor testimony against this harmful bill. Read PPGC’s full statement here, and join our partners at Lift Louisiana tomorrow for a community briefing on the implications and impact of SB 276. Register for the virtual event here.
2. Constitutional Convention: As the end of the session draws closer, we’re still waiting to see whether the con-con will happen this summer. Our friends at Power Coalition are working to ensure we remain educated on the happenings of the con-con. Visit their website here for the latest information.
3. Faith in Action Day at the Capitol: Despite the powerful forces in our state that seek to define what it means to be a person of faith; we need your support to challenge this narrative and demonstrate that supporting reproductive freedom need not be at odds with your religious beliefs. Together, we can reshape the conversation and advocate for justice. Find out more about how to join us here.
1. Sine Die! The 2024 regular legislative session is set to conclude by 6 p.m. next Monday, June 3. Senate President Cameron Henry is focused on finalizing the budget and closing out the session. Stay tuned for our wrap-up later this month.
2. Pride Month: Amidst another challenging legislative session for LGBTQ+ rights, we stand strong in our commitment to equality and inclusion. Join us in celebrating Pride at events in NOLA and Northshore, where we'll stand together in solidarity in this fight for freedom for all.
In a legislative session marked by continued attacks on our health and rights, some lawmakers were unwavering in their defense of reproductive freedom and took a stand against the continued political interference in our personal medical decisions. Let's show our appreciation for those who stood up for Louisianans’ health and rights over politics.
We invite you to use our form to thank them for their efforts to protect essential health care access. Remember, your lawmakers work for you, and they need to hear directly from you.
