Austin, TX — On Thursday, January 14, Planned Parenthood Federation of America filed a federal lawsuit against the extremists behind the Center for Medical Progress video smear campaign targeting Planned Parenthood. The lawsuit, filed in California, outlines how anti-abortion extremists engaged in an elaborate, illegal conspiracy to defraud Planned Parenthood, deceive the public, and block millions of people from getting high quality healthcare from Planned Parenthood.

These extremists spent nearly three years

  • creating a fake company
  • creating fake identities (including fake government IDs)
  • obtaining a credit card using a fake name
  • engaging in a series of lies to sneak into private events
  • trespassing onto private property
  • illegally recording conversations without consent

The lawsuit shows that when they couldn't find any improper or illegal activity, they spliced together shards of lengthy conversations to create short videos and spread false claims that Planned Parenthood profited from fetal tissue donation.

This is the tenth false smear campaign in 15 years aimed at damaging Planned Parenthood's reputation as a trusted healthcare provider to millions of people. Our opponents will stop at nothing to cut off access to reproductive care. Many states, including Texas, used these fraudulent and deceptive videos to investigate Planned Parenthood and to date, not one has found Planned Parenthood guilty of wrongdoing.

We will continue to stand up for our patients and the healthcare they count on from Planned Parenthood. Thank you for standing with us every step of the way--we stand strong because of you.
