Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas Reacts to 5th Circuit Ruling
For Immediate Release: June 9, 2015
Austin / Dallas / Fort Worth / Waco, TX – Today the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on the constitutionality of House Bill 2, legislation passed in 2013 that requires drastic, medically unnecessary regulation of abortion providers and healthcare centers.
If allowed to stand, this ruling will have a devastating impact statewide as access to safe, legal abortion is reduced to fewer than 10 providers for millions of Texas women. Limited access to other critical care provided at these and other health centers has already taken a terrible toll as clinics began closing two years ago.
“While we are deeply disappointed in this ruling, we are committed to protecting access to reproductive and preventive healthcare for Texans who need us. Planned Parenthood remains strong despite constant threats from Texas legislators to roll back all women’s healthcare, including even breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured women,” said Ken Lambrecht, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas. “We won’t back down, and we are proud that three of the remaining locations for safe, legal abortion are Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas health centers in Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth.”
Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas serves women and men throughout Central and North Texas with a full range of reproductive and preventive healthcare. As clinics close around the state, Planned Parenthood health centers in Dallas, Fort Worth, Waco, and Austin receive calls from women who no longer have access to local care—including safe, legal abortion.
In anticipation of this legislation, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas launched the Building Our Future Fund to protect access to critical reproductive and preventive healthcare. Funding made possible the construction of a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical center in Dallas in 2014, renovations and enhancements to existing health centers, and provides assistance to women who must travel outside their community to access safe, legal abortion.
