On August 29, 2024, the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas delivered a pivotal victory for reproductive rights by granting a preliminary injunction blocking a state law that prevents advanced practice clinicians from administering medication abortion.

The Franklin County Court of Common Pleas issued a temporary injunction stopping several Ohio laws that require abortion patients to wait at least 24 hours after receiving certain state-mandated information before getting an abortion. This is the first ruling citing the Ohio Reproductive Freedom Amendment, which was added to the state constitution on December 7, 2023.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio (PPGOH) announced this week that Dr. Bhavik Kumar has been appointed Chief Medical Officer. He will oversee the medical providers and health care centers that serve more than 60,000 patients. Dr. Adarsh Krishen, PPGOH’s Chief Medical Officer since 2017, announced his planned retirement this week.

Today’s unanimous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court ensures that access to mifepristone and the regimen for medication abortion remains unchanged. Abortion, including medication abortion, remains safe and legal in Ohio. Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio will continue to ensure patients can access the care they need, no matter what. 

Today, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Ohio, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the law firm WilmerHale, and Fanon Rucker of the Cochran
Law Firm amended their complaint in an existing lawsuit against a ban on telehealth medication abortion services while simultaneously challenging other laws in Ohio that restrict access to this safe abortion option.

Today the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Ohio, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the law firm Covington & Burling LLP filed a lawsuit on behalf of abortion providers challenging several Ohio laws that together force abortion patients to wait a minimum of 24 hours after receiving unnecessary state-mandated information in person before they can access their desired abortion care.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, and Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region are encouraged to see that after an outpouring of public comment, the Ohio Department of Health and Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services revised proposed rules so that gender-affirming care will remain accessible for adults in Ohio.
