New York, NY – Today, on the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York says “thank you” to the doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and health center staff who make abortion care possible. Planned Parenthood staff members, as well as doctors at independent clinics, and reproductive justice advocates are passionate, caring, skilled professionals who believe in the well-being and dignity of every patient. Despite the ongoing political attacks on our health care and targeted attempts to shut down health centers, these courageous individuals serve every patient with compassion and respect.
Statement from Laura McQuade, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:
Today we celebrate the fearless abortion providers who dedicate themselves to the well-being of their patients. They do this in the face of harassment, violence and anti-abortion extremists obsessed with stripping people of their bodily autonomy. Patients rely on our health care professionals - not politicians - to provide the expert, compassionate abortion care they deserve. Those decisions are always honored by abortion providers who trust and respect their patients. Their vital work allows people to chart their own course and ensure that the communities they serve get the best care possible.
Planned Parenthood of Greater New York is proud to provide abortion care along with a wide range of sexual and reproductive services including STI testing and treatment, HIV testing and prevention, cancer screenings, wellness examines, counseling, and more. A person will never be turned away because of their age, race, zip code, or ability to pay.
The National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers started in memory of Dr. David Gunn, the first abortion provider killed in the United States, on March 10, 1993. In recent years, the day has become a way to dismantle stigma that many health care professionals still face and to bring attention to their commitment to the people and communities they serve.
