Massapequa, New York – On Tuesday, May 2nd Planned Parenthood of Greater New York opened its door to the newly renovated and thoroughly modernized, Massapequa health center. The space was shut down in March of last year when a car tragically crashed into the center causing significant damage and halting operations. The ribbon cutting event became a celebration of the center’s re-opening and the resiliency of the PPGNY staff and the neighboring Massapequa community.

During the event, a number of speakers shared remarks on what this means for the community and the significance of having the center back in operations. Jennifer Mille, the Vice President of Facilities & Security for the Massapequa health center, located in 35 Carmans Road, shared how much effort and hard work went into the modernization and reopening of the space. “The car drove into the north-west corner of the building with so much force that he drove through three complete exam rooms and part of a fourth. We had to replace every cabinet and most of the floor; due to water damage we had to purchase brand new, state of the art supplies and computer equipment, and the entire ceiling grid had to be rehung.” Find photos and videos of the grand opening event here.

Statement from Gloria Acevedo, Health Center Manager, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York:

The re-opening of our Massapequa health center couldn't have come at a better time. When ceaseless attempts to take away at our reproductive rights compromised our services, a new and modernized health center will allow us to enhance patient care, improve our service offerings and the overall patient experience for the people of Massapequa. The re-opening and modernization of this vital community health center reflects our mission to improve health outcomes in Long Island communities that face systemic racial and economic barriers to essential health care and to ensured everyone has access to sexual and reproductive healthcare, no matter what.

The event featured light bites, guided tours of the 2,392 square feet space, and swag giveaways for all attendees. The reopening of the health center is a huge win for health care access of the people of Massapequa and a milestone for reproductive rights in Nassau County.
