IUD and the Implant
Looking for reliable, low-maintenance birth control? Long-acting reversible contraception (sometimes called a “LARC”), may be a good option for you. Come to the birth control experts at Planned Parenthood for a hormonal IUD (Kyleena, Liletta, Mirena, or Skyla), non-hormonal IUD (Paragard), or the implant (Nexplanon). Schedule an appointment at any of our 9 health centers below.
Now offering sedation for IUD insertion
You asked. We listened.
Getting an IUD shouldn’t be scary or traumatizing. For some people, medication given through an IV is necessary to ensure a comfortable experience. We now offer sedation for IUD placement at our Fairview Heights, Illinois, health center.
We accept many types of insurance and will bill your insurance for sedation services. If cost is a barrier, please discuss with our call center team members.
Appointments with sedation are available on weekdays and Saturdays. Please plan to have a driver to take you home from your appointment. Call us today at 618-277-6668 to request sedation.
For most people, a moderate or twilight level of sedation will be sufficient. On rarer occasions, a deeper level of sedation may be best. Our team members will work with you to determine the right pain management for you.
Types of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception
Nexplanon (The Implant)
Nexplanon is a thin, matchstick-sized plastic rod that's implanted under the skin of your upper arm.
- 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
- Contains etonogestrel, a progestin hormone used in some birth control methods
- Lasts up to 5 years
Hormonal IUD
The hormonal intra-uterine device (IUD) is a plastic device that releases a small amount of the synthetic hormone progestin to prevent sperm from reaching the cervix. There are four types of hormonal IUD: Mirena, Kyleena, Skyla, and Liletta.
- 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
- Effective for up to 8 years
Paragard
The non-hormonal IUD, Paragard, is a plastic device wrapped with a thin copper wire. The presence of copper in the uterus damages sperm such that they are no longer able to move toward a potential egg. If sperm can't reach the egg, pregnancy can't happen.
- 99% effective at preventing pregnancy
- Contains no hormones
- Effective for up to 12 years
