A new poll conducted by Impact Research shows Missouri voters’ stances on abortion. Impact Research surveyed 500 likely 2022 voters in Missouri between January 29 and February 2, 2022. Of those surveyed, 51% voted for Donald Trump in the November 2020 election.
This poll affirms national data, which consistently shows the majority of Americans — Democrats, independents, and Republicans — want to see abortion remain safe and legal. In Missouri, 75 percent of those surveyed want abortion to remain legal.
The data shows that most Missouri voters understand that we are in a critical moment for abortion rights. Fifty-eight percent of those surveyed believe that it is likely that the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade in the next few years.
In September 2021, Texas passed the most extreme abortion ban in the country (Senate Bill 8). A bill modeled after Texas’ abortion ban has been proposed in the Missouri Legislature. This bill would ban all abortions after six weeks and would give people financial rewards to sue abortion providers or anyone else who helps someone access abortion care, including doctors, nurses, and those who provide transportation to the procedure, such as a family member or Uber driver. Fifty-four percent of Missourians polled said they oppose passing this bill in Missouri.
When asked if they would support or oppose the so-called “bounty-hunter” provision, which gives people financial reward to sue abortion providers or anyone else who helps someone access abortion care in Missouri, over two-thirds of respondents (67%) opposed this provision.
