Planned Parenthood Great Plains Expands to Southwest Oklahoma, Opens New Health Center in Lawton to Increase Access to Family Planning and Other Essential Care

Planned Parenthood Great Plains (PPGP) is excited to launch a new health center in Lawton, Oklahoma, marking the organization's expansion into the southwestern region of the state. The Lawton location brings access to reproductive health care much closer to home for patients in a part of the state where there is an identified need for sexual health. The clinic started seeing patients for a wide range of services including birth control, STI and HIV testing and treatment, emergency contraception (morning-after pill), pregnancy testing and services, and general wellness care.

Planned Parenthood Great Plains on President’s Executive Order: Abortion Should Be Safe, Legal, and Accessible

Today, Planned Parenthood Great Plains (PPGP) applauded President Biden’s Executive Order Protecting Access to Reproductive Health Care Services including expanding access to contraceptives and safeguarding privacy. This Executive Order comes two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned 50 years of a constitutional right to an abortion, which immediately impacted much of the region PPGP serves.

Oklahoma Total Abortion Bans Challenged in Court

Today, abortion providers and advocates in Oklahoma filed a lawsuit in state court challenging two total abortion bans with criminal penalties for providers, one of which has been on the books since 1910. The 1910 “pre-Roe” ban prohibits abortion entirely and was revived by the Oklahoma Attorney General on June 24, 2022, after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Today, Planned Parenthood Great Plains (PPGP) board of directors announced Emily Wales has been named the organization’s president and CEO. To build on PPGP’s priority of expanding patient access, PPGP also announced the establishment of the Center for Abortion and Reproductive Equity (CARE), which will bring together PPGP’s expertise in lowering barriers to comprehensive care, with a commitment to addressing the structural challenges faced by marginalized communities in accessing health care.

Oklahoma Becomes First State to Entirely Ban Abortion

Today, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed into law H.B. 4327, a citizen-enforced total ban on abortion that took effect today immediately upon signature. Oklahoma is now the only state in the United States to successfully outlaw abortion while Roe v. Wade still stands.

Vigilante Abortion Ban Takes Effect in Oklahoma

Today, the Oklahoma Supreme Court declined to immediately block a citizen-enforced ban on abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy (S.B. 1503). The Oklahoma state legislature passed the ban on April 28 with anti-abortion lawmakers forestalling any debate or questions.

Planned Parenthood Starts Telemedicine Abortions in Kansas

Regional CEO visits Lawton Planned Parenthood

Emily Wales discussed reproductive healthcare and the variety of services offered at the location, including STD and STI prevention. It was her first time visiting since the location opened in November. She said the new location has filled a need within the community.
