Planned Parenthood Great Plains Remembers Suzie Allen

September 19, 2016

Overland Park – Planned Parenthood Great Plains (PPGP) is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of long-time supporter and passionate reproductive health and rights advocate, Suzie Allen. Suzie, the granddaughter of Kansas City’s famed developer, J.C. Nichols, was a constant presence in the work of Planned Parenthood Great Plains for the past 40 years.

“Suzie’s desire for our community to have equal access to reproductive and sexual health care is a legacy that will live on through PPGP’s programs, the patients we serve and the rights Suzie devoted her life to protecting and advancing.  She was an impassioned women’s rights advocate and deeply committed to lifting stigma and breaking barriers for our patients who needed access to birth control, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings and abortion,” Planned Parenthood Great Plains President and CEO, Laura McQuade said.

Suzie became an integral part of the Planned Parenthood family in 1976, serving on the Kansas City Board of Directors from 1976 to 1988, and as Board Chair from 1981 to 1983. She went on to lead several Board committees, including founding the organization’s Advisory Council and serving as its Chair since 1991 and remained as Chair until her death. Suzie also served on Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s national Board of Directors from 1983 to 1988. In addition to her leadership, Suzie was an enormously generous benefactor, including funding the Education and Resource Center in Overland Park, Kansas where administrative staff work today.

PPGP will pay tribute to Suzie’s memory and celebrate her life at its upcoming Kansas City gala, THE event, on November 5th. Her commitment will live on in the Suzanne E. Allen Lifetime Achievement Award, which was introduced last year to commemorate PPGP’s 80th anniversary and to ensure that the most ardent reproductive health and rights supporters would be recognized for their work far into the future.

“Suzie’s intellect, passion, wit and generosity were unmatched. She will be deeply missed by all those who had the great good fortune of calling her a colleague and friend and our hearts go out to her family as they mourn this sudden departure from their lives,” McQuade said.
