Our Global Programs focus on building our partners’ capacity to deliver high-quality sexual and reproductive health services and sexuality education. We do this by leveraging our expertise in sexual and reproductive health programming, which is grounded in our work in 27 health centers and countless communities in our four-state region, as well as the capacity-building support we provide to a wide range of partner organizations across the U.S.
We focus our efforts on people who are often overlooked, not effectively reached with existing health education and services, and are most at risk for poor health outcomes; this includes young people, LGBTQ people, and other groups who experience marginalization and stigma that prevent them from exercising their sexual and reproductive rights.
Our global work is grounded in our belief in:
Justice and Health Equity: We recognize that great disparity exists in health outcomes within and between countries. Young people in low and middle income countries, particularly adolescent girls and young women, experience high rates of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unintended pregnancy. Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for 15- to 19-year-old girls globally. Sexuality education, increasing access to family planning services, and ensuring that those services are empathetic to the needs of youth can help young people who choose to prevent pregnancy..
Evidenced Based Programming: We are a nationally recognized leader in sexual and reproductive health care, sexuality education, and advocacy for sexual and reproductive rights. Planned Parenthood staff have hands-on experience in cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches to high-quality service delivery, education, and training in the U.S. We work side-by-side with staff from our partner organizations to build their capacity to deliver high-quality care.
Two-way Learning Exchange: While working with our partner organizations to build their capacity, we learn through our partnerships, improving our service to geographically and culturally diverse clients.
Big Impact from Small Investments: In addition to building capacity, the earnings from our endowment allow us to make small grants to some of our local partners. Small grants can have a big impact. In 2018 alone, we directly reached over 6,700 youth with sexuality education through our Global Programs partner organizations in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam—less than $5 for each young person we reached—and our programs are growing every year.
