Planned Parenthood is here to help parents and children talk more often about the things that matter, including puberty, sexual decision-making, and staying healthy.
Our Programs Help Families Talk
Teens rank parents as the #1 influence on their sexual decisions. They need your guidance on sexuality whether or not they ask for it. The Education Department at Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands (PPGNHI) is here to help you start and continue an ongoing conversation about puberty, sex and sexuality, decision-making and peer pressure, abstinence and birth control, and a variety of other discussions that can help keeps kids safe and healthy.
Studies show that young people whose parents talk with them about sex are much more likely to postpone sex, have fewer partners, and are less likely to have an unplanned pregnancy or get a sexually transmitted infection. They are also more likely to use birth control consistently and correctly when they do become sexually active.
Planned Parenthood has a long history of encouraging family communication through our programs and publications. We know that parents want their children to have accurate information, acquire strong values, and receive emotional support in learning how to understand sexuality and relationships. We also know that many parents struggle with how to talk about these important issues. Our family programs and workshops can help.
Growing Up: All About Puberty
These classes are for parents (or other adult caregivers) and their 9 to 12 year-old children. Specifically designed to enhance parent/child communication about sexuality, the program creates a relaxed, yet professional atmosphere in which educators guide parents and kids through activities that stimulate conversation, clarify family values and provide accurate information about the physical and emotional changes of puberty.
Each workshop lasts about 2 hours and can vary in size from 2 to 10 families. There is a registration cost, but scholarships are available.
Families Are Talking
These classes are for parents of any school-age child to learn when and how to talk with children about sexuality and how to answer their questions. Parents or caregivers will learn about child development and age-appropriate sexual behavior, ways to communicate their beliefs and values, and identify strategies to solve problems and address difficult situations. Separate programs are available for parents with children in preschool, elementary, and adolescent age groups.
Each workshop last about 2 hours and can vary in size from 3-30 adults. There is a registration cost, but scholarships are available.
