Long-stalled abortion bill passes New York Legislature

New York lawmakers Tuesday authorized the most sweeping set of protections to the state’s abortion laws in 49 years, raising emotions from advocates and opponents who descended on the state Capitol for most of the day.

The Reproductive Health Act, blocked for years when Republicans controlled the State Senate, easily passed both Democratic-controlled houses.

Neighborhood Health to share mobile unit, and reach more Buffalo schoolchildren

Neighborhood Health Center filed plans to spend $8,000 to launch a mobile health unit as an extension clinic. But in a unique twist, the organization isn’t starting something new, but instead using existing, excess capacity at a unit owned by another health provider.

The agency has been approved by federal officials at the Bureau of Primary Health Care to sub-lease an existing van owned by Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York, which it will use to provide primary care services to low-income children at nine Buffalo Public Schools.

Congress Lets Landmark Violence Against Women Law Lapse During Budget Extension

The Violence Against Women Act first passed in 1994 and will lapse on Dec. 7 for the second time since its passage.

One of the bill’s original co-authors, Democrat Louise Slaughter of New York, died in February. Her elected replacement, Democrat Joe Morelle, pledged on Dec. 3 to fight for the law’s re-authorization this week, reported the Washington, D.C., ABC TV affiliate. Morelle joined the Willow Domestic Violence Center, RESTORE Sexual Assault Services, and Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York to call for its restoration.

Local groups call on Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act

Local leaders Monday called for action on the Violence Against Women Act on Monday.

In the conference, Congressman Joe Morelle, Willow Domestic Violence Center, RESTORE Sexual Assault Services, and Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York called for the re-authorization of the act.

The act funds victim assistance services like legal aid, rape crisis centers, and programs that provide emergency housing.
