Planned Parenthood of Central and Western NY sees surge in out-of-state patients

In a typical year, Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York sees about 100 patient visits from out of state.

However, in just the last roughly two months since the Supreme Court overturned federal abortion rights in late June, President Michelle Casey said the organization eclipsed that figure by a lot.

Letter: More flags represent increased awareness

Another statistic increased this year, but it got lost in the Corona News.

Last year, statistics noted that someone is sexually assaulted in the U.S. every two minutes, or 720 every day. The average is now once every 73 seconds — or 1,183, in 24 hours.*

April is “Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” and agencies like RESTORE use this month and all year to inform communities about the realities of sexual violence and resources for support.

Letter: Cuomo is keeping women safe by upholding reproductive care

Abortion care is health care, and a time sensitive service. A delay of days or weeks can have multiple harmful consequences for patients and potentially make it inaccessible.

Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York and Planned Parenthood health centers across the country are doing their part to support other health care professionals who are on the frontlines. Planned Parenthood is committed to working with other providers and hospitals to provide critical reproductive health services so that they may focus their efforts on Covid-19 related care.

Flag displays mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month

As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, flag displays are popping up in Genesee, Orleans and Livingston counties.

“RESTORE remains operational during this uncertain time and our communities will survive and heal from COVID-19 just as we work toward ending sexual and domestic violence — together,” said Lauren Berger of RESTORE.

Help is available for isolated people in abusive situations

For the people who are self-isolating with their abuser, RESTORE continues to staff its 24-hour confidential hotline at 1 (800) 527-1757. It covers Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties to provide information, support, referrals and help for planning to stay safe.

WNY Women's March hits steps of City Hall with long list of concerns

Despite the bitter winds, low temperature and snow, several hundred people turned out Sunday on the steps of Buffalo City Hall for the 2020 Western New York Women's March.

It was all part of a national Weekend of Action, particularly in Washington, D.C., but also in Seneca Falls, NY, birthplace of the women's movement. Here, they braved a Western New York winter day to urge people to vote and to stand up for issues they believe important.

'We have our love to keep us warm': Winter weather did not stop women's march

Winter weather and wild winds did not stop more than 70 local groups from stomping through the snow at Niagara Square for the annual women's march on Sunday. 

"We care for people and the planet, so it may be cold, but our souls are on fire," Western New York Peace Center executive director Victoria Ross said, adding, "We have our love to keep us warm."
