Planned Parenthood Statement on NYS Senate Interruption

Planned Parenthood of Western New York Calls on Gov. Patterson and Senate to Advance the Reproductive Health Act This Session

It has been two weeks since the interruption in the NYS Senate brought the chamber to a screeching halt.  “It is imperative that the Governor lead this State, and bring the legislation to the Senate floor that the voters support. Nearly three quarters of New Yorkers support the passage of the Reproductive Health Act (RHA),” said Karen J. Nelson, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Western New York.
The RHA was scheduled to be voted on June 10, just two days following the upheaval in the Senate.  The bill has strong bi-partisan support.  “The Senate needs to get back to business and pass the bills that the House firmly believes in,” continued Nelson.
The women and families of New York need to know that they can count on their elected officials to do the job they have been elected to do. For the past two cycles, New Yorkers have voted in record numbers, sending the consistent message that change was needed in Albany.  The change we have seen in the past two weeks runs awry of the voters’ will.
“Governor Paterson, add the Reproductive Health Act to the extraordinary session proclamation and champion women’s reproductive health care as you have consistently done throughout your career. It is time for New York State Senator to set aside their personal agendas and get back to the work of the people.”

Planned Parenthood of Western New York provides reproductive and family healthcare, promotes responsible and healthy sexuality, and protects choice.
