Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY) believes that when young people have the tools necessary to make healthy decisions about their bodies and their relationships, they have a brighter future. PPCWNY will present a virtual program in collaboration with Senator Samra Brouk on May 18 at 7pm titled, Preparing Youth to Lead Safe and Healthy Lives: Enacting Comprehensive Sex Education in New York State. Speakers will talk about the importance of comprehensive sex education. New York lacks a requirement for sex education and as a result, the state has a patchwork system based on where young people live, leading to inequities in the information and skills young people have.
Speakers include New York State Senator Samra Brouk, 55th Senate District; Debora McDell-Hernandez, Senior Director of Public and Community Affairs, PPCWNY; Danielle D'Onofrio, CHES Outreach and Education Specialist, PPCWNY; Absara Haile, Supervisor of Health Education and Outreach, PPCWNY; Mofiyin Obadina, M.D., Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, President of the Association of Minority Residents & Fellows, University of Rochester Medical Center.
“I am greatly concerned about the unacceptably high incidence of relationship violence, sexual harassment and assault, and online bullying and sexual harassment that happens in our society today,” said Senator Samra Brouk (SD-55) “This legislation is to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to make responsible decisions affecting their health and well-being, to be able to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy relationships, and to treat one another with respect.”
Senator Samra Brouk is sponsor of Senate Bill S2584A, which would require the inclusion of comprehensive, medically accurate, culturally, age, and developmentally appropriate sexuality education in publicly funded K-12 schools in New York.
