Catharine Rowntree Advocacy Award
“Always be a lady, but never back down.” This is how Catharine Rowntree’s son describes his mother’s attitude towards advocacy. Catharine knew the political process is the key to social change. She was one of the original advocates who worked with Miggie Baum to start a Monroe County pro-women's health political action committee in the early 1980’s. MCCFP-PAC issued an annual voter’s guide and financially supported pro-women's health candidates long before other state and national organizations were doing so. This group evolved into our local Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York (PPANY). Catharine was on the PPANY Board of Directors since its inception in 1990 and was one of its strongest supporters.

Catharine was known for her unfailing graciousness, tenacity, and dedication. She never gave up or backed down from what she knew was right. The Catharine Rowntree Advocacy Award is presented to an individual in the Rochester community who exemplifies these characteristics.

Elaine served in a number of public offices including the county legislature, county clerk and the Town Board of Dewitt. Hours after New York legalized abortion in 1970, she opened the nation’s first legal abortion clinic at the East Genesee Street location.

The Ellen Fairchild Award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the traits Ellen Fairchild displayed throughout her long relationship with Planned Parenthood—leadership, community spirit, energy, dedication, and perseverance.
