PPCGNNJ currently operates several Teen Advisory groups (in Perth Amboy, Highland Park, Keansburg and Freehold), which engage high school students in in-depth discussions and education sessions on a variety of sexual health topics. In addition to participating in education programs, our teen advisors provide our agency staff with valuable feedback and guidance about matters that are important to them and their peers, as well as advice on best ways to reach more youth with information about our programs and services.
While issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) students and reducing homophobia are discussed with all of our teen advisors, our newest group in Freehold has a particular emphasis on meeting the sexual health needs of students who identify as LGBTQ. We seek guidance from teen advisory members who are also part of the school’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) that help our agency enhance its education, outreach and health services to members of the LGBTQ community.
While most of our Teen Advisory groups meet at area high schools, all of the groups have an opportunity to meet at one of our Planned Parenthood health centers. At these meetings, teen advisors meet our health services staff, learn more about our health services, and take a tour of the facility. Teen advisors, because of their experience with Planned Parenthood’s Teen Advisory program, are often a resource for their peers on sexual health and related issues.
Teen Advisory groups meet approximately four times per year.
